For the first time in history, Intel transferred nearly 5000 patents to authorize third parties

Intel has signed an agreement with ipvalue management group to transfer nearly 5000 patents to a newly established company within the group, which will seek to license them to a third party.

Ipvalue, who describes itself as an intellectual property manager, said that the new agreement extends the company's existing licensing arrangements with Intel and includes further patent portfolios in its terms of reference.

These patents have been transferred to Tahoe Research Limited, a newly established company within the ipvalue management group. It is said that the portfolio includes patents related to Intel inventions, covering a wide range of fields, such as "microprocessors, logic devices, computing systems, memory and storage, connection and communication, packaging, semiconductor architecture and design, and semiconductor manufacturing."

Ipvalue stated that it intends to license the Tahoe portfolio to its "established and growing network of licensees" and will continue to acquire and license the portfolio from other sources.

Intel's IP portfolio may contain old patents that have not expired but no longer represent cutting-edge technologies, so the chipmaker may view this licensing arrangement as a way to maximize its revenue by allowing ipvalue to process some of its patents. License them to third parties.

Keith Wilson, executive vice president of cooperation and acquisition of ipvalue, said in a statement that the company has a team of experienced IP professionals and is ready to start licensing the Tahoe product portfolio.

"This initiative strengthens the mission of ipvalue to reward and promote innovation, and supports Intel's free operation goal, enabling Intel to focus more time and energy on what it is best at: promoting innovation that can promote global progress and enrich life," Wilson said.

According to the IP news line Iam, working with ipvalue is an attractive option for Intel, because it rarely participates in patent litigation, but has a record of returning high amounts of money to partners.

It quoted John Lindgren, CEO of ipvalue, as saying that the company is more willing to obtain a large number of patents from established enterprises because it makes it more direct to deal with potential licensees.

Iam said that this was "another important milestone" for ipvalue since Lindgren, former head of conversant, joined the company in 2017. It now has a portfolio of more than 12000 active assets.

This is not the first time Intel has transferred a large amount of IP to another company. As early as 2019, this chip giant agreed to sell its smartphone modem business to apple. Prior to this, a legal dispute occurred between apple and Qualcomm, which led to Apple signing a six-year global license agreement to use Qualcomm chips instead of Intel chips.

This move not only transferred Intel's intellectual property rights to Cupertino, but also transferred Intel's more than 2000 employees, equipment and other assets to Cupertino in a transaction worth about US $1 billion.

Intel also sold its NAND flash memory and SSD business to sk Hynix of South Korea at a price of US $9 billion in 2020. However, the transaction will not be fully completed until 2025, when Intel will transfer its IP related to NAND flash memory wafer manufacturing and design.
